The hypothalamus
is part of the brain, located at the central bottom portion of
the brain (see below), serving an important purpose as the main
link between the nervous system and endocrine system. The
hypothalamus uses many types of neurotransmitters and
neuromodulators to control the nervous system. Certain
nerve cells in the hypothalamus control the endocrine system via
the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is located
directly below the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus relays
information sensed by the brain to the pituitary gland using
neurohormones, also called hypothalamic-releasing hormones.
