All About the Endocrine System

Reflection

I choose to make a website on the endocrine system because I felt it would be the best learning tool to teach someone else about an unfamiliar subject.  I was originally going to make a PowerPoint presentation but decided that this would not be as effective as a learning tool or as interesting.  I wanted to try something new that I hadn't done before.  A website allowed me to easily include pictures and descriptions to go along with it.  On each page of the website, I have included pictures and a brief but clear description of each part of the endocrine system.  The parts that I have discussed include the pineal gland down to the gonads.  I have a picture on each page labeling where the organism is (outlined by an orange box) within the endocrine system.  I used this component as a visual to guide visitors through the endocrine system and so they could see how the different organisms relate to each other.  I have also discussed some key diseases related to the endocrine system.  These include: Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Type 1 Diabetes, and Type 2 Diabetes.  I found that the website format presented  the visual diagrams along with the explanations of each organ in an effective, concise, and instructive manner.   The web format also allows the user to review organs as needed to clarify their understanding of the endocrine system.

Before I did this project, I knew very little about the endocrine system.  I knew it had many organs, some of which were new to me (parathyroid, pineal gland, hypothalamus).  In addition, I did not know how they all used hormones to communicate among themselves and to other organs in the body.  I had little knowledge of the organs and what they did.  I also didn't know that different diseases could result from the endocrine system.  My goal after this project was to have a full, clear understanding of the endocrine system.  I have met this goal through this website project.

For further research, I might want to learn about the diseases and how they affect the body and if there are any cures for them.  I would be curious to know if the diseases affect anything else other than the endocrine system.

The reflection can either be viewed as a Microsoft Word Document or Adobe PDF file.
